FOREVER
YOUNG "We want women to feel beautiful in
our clothing," says Hedaya of Caroline Hedeya by Donna and
Caroline. Their line debuted at New York's Spring 2006 shows,
revealing fresh, flattering pieces that seem to echo the voice
of a new generation. That's because designer duo Caroline
Hedaya and Donna Baxter are the new generation. Both just 22,
the young New Yorkers may be tenderfeet to the catwalk, but
their sartorial savvy is certainly taking them places. Hedaya
drew inspiration from vintage couture like Gucci, Pucci and
Yves Saint Laurent that she discovered in her grandmother's
closet; Baxter, a former singer, from the underground rock
scene. The combination of such distinctive design initiatives
resulted in a unique collection of classic silhouettes,
tailored with contemporary accents. Skinny pants and pencil
skirts feature de rigeur empire waists, cinched with wide
belts and adorned with over-sized buttons, while ruffled
dresses and separates play with the limits of taffeta,
pinstripes and polka dots. Voluminous skirts and cropped
jackets, in particular, are reminiscent of Chloe and Narcisco
Rodriquez. Hedaya and Baxter's nautically-themed palette of
white, beige and navy hues captured the youthful elegance of
Jacqueline Kennedy, while whimsical fabrics like silk, chiffon
and linen provided a flirty final touch. It's what they call
the "young sophisticate" look. We can't wait to see their fall
collection, inspired by Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park."
